Kentlilik üzerine düşünmek

Özet: Kentlilik kavramı kentsel çalışmalar alanının zorlu konularından biridir. Kavramın zorluğu sosyal, kültürel, politik ve ekonomik pek çok farklı alanın kesişiminde yer almasıyla yakından ilişkilidir. Kentlilik için üzerinde uzlaşılabilecek kolay bir tanımı hemen vermek güçtür: bazen köylülüğün karşıtı olarak tanımlanmakta, bazen belli bir toplumsal grubun tüketim kalıplarına işaret etmekte, bazense medenilik veya belli bir politik farkındalık anlamında kullanılmaktadır. Bu haliyle “ötekiler”le etkileşime olanak sağlayarak veya elitist bir şekilde statükonun korunmasını getirerek içerme ve dışlama mekanizmalarına da gönderme yapmaktadır. Bu yazı kentliliğin modernleşme tarihine paralel olarak kent literatüründe nasıl tartışıla gelindiğinin izini sürerek kavramın hem üstlendiği işlevi hem de ürettiği değeri tartışmayı amaçlamaktadır. Ayrıca günümüzde daha hakça bir kent yaşamı talebi olarak yorumlayabileceğimiz Henri Lefebvre’nin “kent hakkı” kavramı çerçevesinde kentliliği nasıl yeniden düşünebileceğimiz sorusunu ele almaktadır.

Thinking on urbanity

Urbanity is one of the difficult concepts of urban studies. The difficulty of the term relates to its status at the intersection of different domains such as social, political, economic and cultural. It is not easy to give the definition of it on which there is even a remote consensus. Sometimes it is defined as the opposite category of rurality, or sometimes it is used to refer certain consumption pattern of a social group, and sometimes it is used to refer the condition of civility or political awareness. With this position, it also points to the mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion by giving possibility to interact with others or keeping the status quo in an elitist manner. This paper aims to discuss both the function and the value of the concept by following the discussions on the concept in the urban literature parallel to the history of modernization. In addition, it tries to answer the question of how can we rethink urbanity within the context of Henri Lefebvre’s concept of “right to the city” which can be interpreted as the demand of more just city.
